I sometimes wash my brushes, squeeze out the water and continue oil painting. The damp brushes do not interfere with the painting process. But I wondered if a small amount of water would cause problems with longevity later. Does anyone know?
If we’re talking about a small amount of dampness on a freshly washed brush, no, that is not likely to cause any problems. Water is present in water-miscible oil paints in larger amounts than that, and I am not aware of any issue with these paints drying normally. It is important to have a moisture-free surface when varnishing the finished art, but I can’t imagine there would be any significant amount remaining from slightly damp brushes used months earlier.
