Hi,
I have been reading some of the questions on this forum from a few years ago about the concerns with zinc in oil grounds on linen. I was wondering if there were any updates or studies on how such linen may behave over time?
I am trying to figure out what might happen to the paintings I have already completed in linen with these grounds.
Thank you for your help
Hi Brian, Thank you for your response and for reaching out to others as well. I am greatful for your efforts to shed light on this situation
I am not aware of a new comprehensive study on the use of zinc oxide containing oil grounds. From what I understand that even a low percentage of zinc oxide will contribute brittleness.
This should not necessarily be thought of as a death knell for your works. As always. The more stable the environment, the more ridged your substrate, the less likely to have some physical impact, the more buffered the work is from changes in environment (backing boards, stretched fabric over a panel, etc.) the less likelihood that brittleness translates into damage.
There are likely internal studies performed by materials manufacturers. I will send this question to a few of our regular moderators and posters to see if they want to add anything to the thread.
