anyone experiencing e with silverfish eating tempera paint from the painting?

Various critters may become interested in the yolk component (protein) of egg tempera paint; I’ve had ants, flies, and mice all nibble on my paintings (the mouse poop next to my painting the next morning was a telltale sign); and students have reported cockroaches, cats and dogs licking at painted panels – not good for the painting or the animal. Once a painting has polymerized (about 1 to 3 months depending on number of layers and drying conditions) the surface should no longer hold interest. How old is your painting? If I’m having a pest problem I cover my paintings with a piece of cloth when I leave the studio.

After corresponding with a few preventive conservators, I have been asked to inquire if there is any chance that the painting was coated with a gum or starch containing coating (gum Arabic, methyl cellulose, starch, etc.) Our answer with be predicated on you response.
