Are there good ways to prepare a layer of paint for overpainting that has become overly oily or slick? Sanding with coarse sandpaper still leaves a surface that squeaks if I rub my finger across it.
First we recommend to avoid using coarse sandpaper. You are far better off with a finer grit (like 220) and performing a bit more sanding, always keeping in mind the safety issues that come along with making potential hazardous/toxic dust (see our Health and Safety Document in the Resources section for more details about proper respirators, etc). You can consider sanding dry or perhaps sanding after applying some mineral spirits (OMS will also work) to prevent spreading airborne particles, followed by another “rinse” with more mineral spirits using a rag (again proper disposal should be considered here). Hopefully this will help to create a better “tooth” on the surface to promote better adhesion for subsequent paint layers.
