Can you please tell me how to remove small spots of rust left on a drawing that was held by metal bulldog clips?  I’d like to not have to trim the paper.  If left , what would be some adverse results? Thank you.

Our moderators who are paper conservators ( those who care for artworks on paper) will hopefully be able to provide you with some tips….

Hi, this is a great question. Unfortunately, removing rust spots isn’t possible to do at home, as this would most likely involve the use of a very controlled, gentle bleaching treatment that can only be performed safely by a conservator. However, the good news is that – depending on the size of the spots, of course – there shouldn’t be too many adverse results to the paper itself as a result of the rust spots. The only potential issue, aside from the aesthetic one, is that the rusted areas may be come weaker as the paper ages. Let me know if you have any further questions and I’ll be happy to help.
