Oil Painting on unprepared hardboard (Masonite)

A customer of mine—I run an art store—came in saying he painted an oil painting 20 years ago “on Masonite” with no surface preparation. He says it looks the same, but is wondering if he can do anything to help its longevity. (Aside from cleaning and varnishing.) Any advice since the substrate was not sealed? What is he up against?

Unprepared hardboard wicks away a lot of paint vehicle, potentially affecting the adhesive power and film integrity of the paint. Nothing applied on top can supplement lost vehicle. Maintaining a generally constant display/storage environment should minimize stress on the paint, however.
