Lineco makes a product called the “Museum Mounting Kit” to make conservative mounting images easier. Do you consider this kit to be able provide true conservative mounting? If so how do think it compares to mounting techniques such as strips and corners that prevent any type of adhesive contact with the artwork?

Ah the water content, that is a great point.

Hi! I think the answer to your question depends upon the type of object being framed. The kit has wheat starch paste and mulberry paper; these materials are often used to safely hinge works on paper during framing, and they are stable and easily reversible. However, wheat starch paste generally has a high moisture content (I’m unsure what weight/volume ratio is recommended by the the instructions in this kit). That can be problematic for items that have moisture-sensitive paper that cockles (becomes “wavy” with the introduction of water) or has moisture-sensitive media. It can also be problematic for photographs, screenprints, coated paper surfaces (often shiny and smooth), and other materials that respond unpredictably to moisture. As with all materials, the skill and knowledge of the person applying them can make all the difference. In that respect, hinging techniques that do not have moisture – or have very minimal moisture – can be a better choice for some materials. This seems to be a solid choice if you’re looking for a pre-packaged kit to hinge non-moisture-sensitive works on paper.
