Glassine to archive watercolors and ink drawings

Is glassine a safe paper to use as interleaving for watercolors and ink drawings? I have heard differing views on this. I have used it for a long time, and have never seen degradation, but recently I read that it should not be used for long term storage. And if not, what is a better paper for interleaving of these works on paper? Thank you in advance, I value all feedback.

That’s a good question. Glassine is still very much in use as a housing material by many art institutions, and I don’t think it is necessarily harmful for short-term use. However, I have seen it degrade terribly over time, becoming yellow and brittle, especially if it is not used in the best environmental conditions. Instead, I would recommend using acid-free, buffered tissue paper or interleaving paper for housing watercolors. You can find it precut or in rolls online at preservation supply shops such as Gaylord, Talas, or University Products. I don’t think the price is hugely different, and it will keep your art safe. Let me know if you have any other housing questions.
