I have been asked to cover some finished paintings with fire retardant. The paintings are acrylic and acrylic spray paint on maple plywood. Is this going to ruin the paintings?

Aside from the consideration for durability of the artwork, there is also the question of whether a fire retardant will impart protection to these materials. Some of these products need to be reapplied every few years, and need to be able to saturate the materials. Some materials are not compatible with specific fire retardants. Specialist craftspeople in film and theater design may be able to advise on the use of this category of product, but most artists will not normally use this in typical display configurations.
