I want to adhere pre-primed canvas to masonite panels using acid free PVA glue. The panels are smooth on both sides. Can I simply glue the canvas directly to the masonite as is or do I need to prep the surface in any way such as cleaning, sanding or priming? (When I adhere canvas to plywood I seal it on all sides with pigmented shellac and then use acid-free PVA glue to attach the canvas so I may be just over-thinking this.)
Best approved practice suggests that it is best to “degrease” the panel (attempting to remove hand oils, etc) first. Many suggest using ethanol to do this, but I wonder about this as methanol and ethanol are not good solvents for oils. I would suggest degreasing with acetone out of doors. Acetone is a great bridge solvent and dissolves a good percentage of almost anything that would be accumulated on the surface. I would also suggest that you use a relatively medium/fine sandpaper to promote physical (mechanical) adhesion. On the other hand, why seal the panel with shellac. This will actually diminish adhesion and not promote it. The PVA will create an adhesive coating and a barrier. Even this is not really an issue as the Masonite is composed of coated exploded wood fibers and are not subject to degradation from the fatty acids in oil paint.
